Getting around Kuwait
Kuwait is a car-oriented country with no metro, but visitors can get around easily with taxis, apps and rental cars.
Quick answer: Use ride-hailing or taxis for short trips and rent a car if you plan to visit several areas. Public buses exist but are less convenient for visitors. Avoid peak traffic hours.
Options
- Taxis and ride-hailing: the easiest choice for tourists. Agree the fare or use the meter or app price.
- Buses: public bus services cover main routes but are slower and harder to navigate for newcomers.
- Car rental: good for flexibility. Carry your licence and, if required, an international driving permit.
- Walking: practical only in compact areas such as Kuwait City’s old centre and seafront promenades.
Driving rules to know

Traffic
Roads are busiest in the morning and late afternoon on working days, and in the evenings near malls. Allow extra time to cross between Kuwait City, Salmiya and the airport.
