Build a monthly budget from your real spending
Enter take-home income rather than a headline salary if deductions are taken before you are paid. Use recent bank and card statements to estimate rent, groceries, transport, utilities, family transfers and other regular costs. If a bill is paid once or twice a year, divide it into a monthly amount so it is not forgotten.
Separate fixed, flexible and occasional costs
- Fixed: rent, instalments and subscriptions that are usually due on a set date.
- Flexible: groceries, transport, phone use and personal spending that can change each month.
- Occasional: school costs, travel, vehicle servicing, document renewals and medical expenses. Set aside a monthly amount when possible.
How to read the result
The remaining amount is income minus the expenses you entered; it is not automatically all available for spending. Keep a buffer for irregular bills and review the plan after a full pay cycle. A savings percentage is a personal target, not a rule: choose an amount that fits your essential costs, dependants and other commitments.
