Dust Storms and Sudden Rain in Kuwait: Safety Guide for Residents
Kuwait's weather is mostly dry, which is why dust storms and rare heavy downpours catch newcomers off guard. Preparing once is easier than reacting each time.

During a dust storm
Dust storms are most common in spring and summer and can cut visibility sharply. Stay indoors if you can, keep windows closed and avoid unnecessary trips. If you have asthma or another breathing condition, a well-fitting N95 or KN95 mask helps outdoors and you should keep your usual medication close.
Driving in low visibility
Slow down, turn on your dipped headlights and increase your following distance. If visibility is near zero, pull off the road completely, switch off the lights and wait. Do not stop in a traffic lane with your lights on, because drivers behind may follow them.
When it rains
Rain is infrequent, so roads and drains cope badly with it. Dust and oil on the surface make roads slippery in the first hours. Avoid underpasses and standing water, never drive through a flooded road, and allow extra time for your commute.
At home afterwards
Dust gets in through small gaps. Wipe surfaces with a damp cloth rather than sweeping dry, replace or wash AC filters after a heavy storm and cover electronics when windows will be open. For forecasts and warnings, follow the Kuwait Meteorological Department and official government announcements.
Quick checklist
- Keep a mask, eye drops and spare AC filters at home.
- Fuel the car before a forecast storm.
- Charge phones and a power bank when heavy rain is forecast.
- Move parked cars away from low-lying streets.
